Wood Duck Boxes

Washington Waterfowl Association (WWA) proudly operates an active and robust wood duck next box program.

In the mid-2000's Washington Waterfowl Association (WWA) obtained a grant from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) and now maintains a statewide wood duck nest box database.

Most chapters assemble, place and maintain wood duck nest boxes and nesting tubes each year across Washington State, usually in late winter to early spring.  Monitoring of the wood duck nest boxes and nesting tubes occurs concurrently.  Participating members of each chapter typically "own" a number of wood duck nesting boxes that they take responsibility in caring for, and report on egg and hatch counts, how many boxes are showing success, and note wood duck activity within their areas.

We also occasionally put out nesting boxes for Canada geese as part of our efforts.

Anyone monitoring wood duck nest boxes can provide the data to WWA for inclusion in the statewide database.  The best way to become involved in this program is to attend a local WWA Chapter meeting.

Guidelines on for managing wood duck boxes can be found HERE, courtesy of WDFW.

past duck box projects

In April 2023, WWA member Paul McGovern met with the City of Kenmore Parks Manager to discuss nesting boxes in the new kayak launch park, called ƛ̕ax̌ʷadis (Tl' awh-ah-dees) on the Sammamish River Slough — Swamp Creek shoreline (aerial view of the park is showing below). They built an incredible park that’s loaded with waterfowl. Shortly after opening Paul McGovern and member Patryk Kowlaski prominently installed two brand new wood duck nest boxes at the park in Kenmore with the WWA logo.
